Payments Council boss steps down
Gerard Lemos takes over as interim chief executive

Adrian Kamellard has stepped down as chief executive of The Payments Council after three years in the role.

The UK payments industry body’s current chairman Gerard Lemos will fill the position until a new chief executive is appointed.

Kamellard leaves his role with the future of the Council uncertain.  The Financial Conduct Authority’s new Payment Systems Regulator (PSR) is due to become officially operational in April 2015, taking over many of the Payment Council’s powers. It has a remit to open up the UK payments system to new entrants and lessen the dominance of the major established banks who control the Link ATM network and Bacs electronic payments system.

There have been rumours the Council will merge with the British Bankers’ Association.

Gerard Lemos, Chairman of the Payments Council, paid tribute to Kamellard, stating: “Under his leadership major improvements have been delivered to benefit consumers across the UK, including the Current Account Switch Service and Paym, the new mobile payments service.”

Kamellard said: “As collaboration in the industry enters a new phase, this is the right time for me to stand down in order to ensure the refocused Payments Council continues to deliver for consumers and the industry alike.”
